Post 501 Coffee, Cards, Donuts, and Camaraderie

  • American Legion Post 501 105 Dempsey Road Madison, WI, 53714 (map)

Our Legion Post 501 Coffee, Cards, Donuts & Camaraderie is working well.  This gathering doesn't involve business talk, nor work at the post, nor fund raising.  We invite all veterans and their spouses are welcome to stop in sometime between 9 am till Noon, on Thursday, March 15th, for some coffee, some conversation, possibly a card game or two, and for those who come hungry - maybe some donuts, kringle or what have you.

Card games could include cribbage, Euchre, penny anti poker or spades, hearts or sheepshead, checkers or chess, dominoes, roulette - what ever tuns your crank. Not only are fellow legionnaires welcome, but also VFW, Navy League, MOAA, ROA, Active Duty from all branches of service and we'll even allow Marine Corps league vets in, so help us Lord.  One member, Charley, donated an antique three track cribbage board, with a snake pattern, so those of us with short term memory challenges won't get lost on the trail.  Come in and check it out.  If you don't know how to play cribbage, Gene, Carol and Bill are well seasoned players who would welcome the opportunity to share some winning ideas, at no cost other than good conversation, and may a bit of kidding if you don't listen well.

Charley is looking for some Euchre players.  We need a couple more folks who know and like the game to show up and give this guy something to do on a Thursday morning, so that he doesn't bother the cribbage players.  Do you know that while serving in the US Navy, Charley served on a warship that escorted President Truman's yacht as they cruised the Gulf of Mexico while Harry the Pres was on vacation in the Key West Presidential summer retreat?  Tough duty for Charley, serving only 90 miles from Cuba in that tropical paradise.  Then ask Charley about his Asian cruise on a destroyer.  While he saw all of the major ports in the far east, he won't talk about some of his transgressions while on liberty leave.  This is why one comes to these meetings - to be regaled with a member's service.  Each of us has an interesting life, especially during military service, and attendance at Thursday's CCD&C gathering is the best way to learn about each other.

Come and join the fun, relaxation and just visiting with fellow vets and other Warriors, who like all of us, have at one time, and even currently, marched in boots.  We had 5 good members who came for a visit during the February gathering.

Come early, stay as long as you wish.  We might ask for a $1 donation to cover the treats, but that will not be an entrance requirement.  Just bring your self, and a fellow vet if you know one, all will be welcome with a good attitude and a willingness to spend some time together.

If you can't make this coffee, check our Post 501 calendar for the scheduled date in the next month and add to your personal calendar.  We look forward to sharing time with you.
